We share our world with an incredible number of other species. Often, we’re able to coexist in harmony, but that’s not always the case. Most frequently, you’ll hear news of how humanity is intruding on the natural environment of other animals, but sometimes those animals can pose a threat to humans. For instance, possums can be both a nuisance and a health threat. Thankfully, if you live in an area where these animals are common, there are options for possum removal. What should you know?
What Threats Do They Pose?
Possums can weigh up to 10 pounds and be two feet long or longer. They’re also adept at getting into areas that you might not expect. For instance, possums can and do intrude in the attics of homes. This poses several risks – possums carry parasites that can be transmitted through their droppings. Possums can also carry communicable diseases that can threaten people. Their droppings and urine also cause foul odours in homes, and they can chew through insulation and electrical wiring. Possum control solutions can prevent these threats.
What Should You Know about Control Solutions?
There are several options available if you need to remove possums from within or around your home. In the past, poisons and trapping/killing were the most common. While those are still available, more and more people are choosing to use nonlethal possum control options. Of course, it’s not recommended that you attempt to take care of the problem on your own. Possums can cause injury and infection by biting and scratching, and putting yourself at risk is not the answer. You’ll need to work with a licensed exterminator who offers no-kill possum removal.
How Does No-Kill Control Work?
With no-kill animal control, the process used is relatively simple. A trap (or series of traps) is set in the area where the possum is living. The trap is baited (possums are omnivores, so almost anything will work). The possum will enter the trap to get at the bait and then the door will close, locking the animal inside. The exterminator will then remove the trap and the animal, and release the possum in an area far away from human habitation.
As you can see, this type of possum control solution is the best option for everyone involved (including the possum). You don’t have to deal with the animal and the possum gets to live.
